![]() Khan’s mango farm is in Malihabad, a large mango belt and mango-lover’s paradise in Northern India with more than 10,000 hectares (38 square miles) of mango farms. Three varieties from Khan’s famous tree: The Tommy Atkins mango (left) that became popular in Florida, the Suvarnarekha (middle) whose name means color or streak of gold, and the Husn-e-Ara (right), which means adorned in beauty. Stocky and bearded in a crisp, white kurta pyjama, he sits under its canopy and points out varieties, each identified by a tiny label on its green pedicle: Dasheri mangoes from a nearby village, Himsagar from West Bengal, Langra from Bihar. Over a video call, Kalimullah Khan, 80, known as the “Mango Man,” introduces me to his creation. That’s because this magical mango tree grows more than 300 varieties. The mangoes on each branch look different too: round, oval, or kidney shaped, some green, some yellow, and others with hues of orange, pink, and purple. Unlike the young trees it towers over, though, the texture of the leaves on each branch is different: Some are dull green or olive green others are glossy and vibrant. In 2013, the concept of megastores was founded where most, if not all, of the company’s brands were stocked in one shop. If this wasn’t enough, the forecast for 2015 is to open 100 new stores. In 2014 alone, the brand has added over 90 stores to its network and plans to end the year with 240 stores.
